University of Valencia (UV) is one the 40 oldest surviving universities in European countries and is considered to be one of the leading academic institutes in Spain. The Universitat de València is among the best 10 universities in the world in Inorganic and Nuclear Chemistry, Image Science and Photographic Technology, Particle Physics, Remote Sensing, and Reproductive Biology, according to the ranking created by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR). Furthermore, the Universitat de València is the Spanish higher education institution with the greatest number of subjects among the top ten positions.
The CWUR 2017 Subjects ranking classifies the universities in 227 theme categories of science and social science. The basis is the number of research articles in top-level international journals. The data comes from Clarivate Analytics (before Propiedad Intelectual y Ciencia by Thomson Reuters). This is the company in charge of elaborating the annual list Higly Cited Researchers, with the most acclaimed researchers in the world.
According to the classification, the Universitat de València gains the second place in Inorganic and Nuclear Chemistry. The first place is for Nanjing University. It also has the fourth place in Reproductive Biology in a list that leads Harvard University. Moreover, regarding Image Science and Photographic Technology, it occupies the eighth place; and finally in matters of Remote Sensing, the UV has the ninth position.
The fact of having five subjects in the top ten positions the Valencian academic institution among the best 100 universities in the world.
Furthermore, the Universitat de València is the Spanish higher education institution with the greatest number of subjects among the top ten positions of the ranking created by the Center for World University Rankings with a HQ in Arabia Saudi. The University has 43,427 degree students (8.15% international students) in Diplomaturas (3-year degrees), Licenciaturas (5-year degrees), engineering and undergraduate degrees. 5,302 official master’s degree students (15.45% international students) and 4,305 doctoral programme students (20.49% international students). The UV is the most international university in Valencia: 2,040 students from other universities all over the world and more than 1,733 UV students in international mobility programmes. It is one of the top ten universities in the world to learn Chinese language and culture, according to the Chinese government and it ranks second in Europe in receiving ERASMUS students.
The UV offers the largest range of studies in Valencia related to 1) Basic and experimental sciences, 2) Health sciences, 3) Engineering, 4) Humanities, 5) Educational Sciences, 6) Social, 7) economic and 8) legal sciences. 54 degree qualifications, 6 double degrees and 4 international double degrees, 116 master’s degree qualifications, two of them within the Erasmus Mundus programme, 64 doctoral programmes, 24 of them with Excellence Mention.
The UV provides more work placements/internships in businesses and institutions in Valencia: 6,500 students participate through agreements with over 2,400 businesses and institutions. Moreover, the UV has made a big commitment to solar energy: the first urban solar park in Spain.
The Universitat of València is internationally recognized for its high-quality research with international impact with 2,894 research papers published in the Web of Science Index as well as the multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research with 19 research institutes and centres, 92 departments, 6 interdisciplinary research structures. The activities of promotion of knowledge transfer for the development of productive sectors are also really important with 106 patents in force, 81 start-up companies located at the science park. Moreover, the Universitat of València is the greatest Valencian university with 18 faculties and schools + doctoral school 4 university campuses: 535.774 m2.
Preventive Medicine and Public Health, Food Science, Toxicology and Forensic Medicine Department (Preventive Medicine and Public Health) from Faculty of Pharmacy is one of the largest departments in the UV and covers different disciplines from Food Science and Technology to Public Health. The research includes nutrition, food science, food technology, toxicology, food microbiology, food chemistry, food analysis, metabolomics, molecular and technological functionality, food processing technology, explorative data analysis, gastronomy, sensory quality, and consumer perception. The activities developed in this Department have a strong basic research, and on the other hand application-oriented research, which will contribute to growth and employment and solve society’s problems, for example within biological production, environmental challenges, food and water safety, and lifestyle diseases. Master's Degree in Food Quality and Safety from Preventive Medicine and Public Health Department is recognized as having national excellence and we have strong national and international collaborations with leading research institutions as well as with major food and non-food industries. Dynamic and fruitful collaboration is performed in close collaboration with national and international public and private organizations, stressed by the research grants and projects donated in the last 5 years.
